Founder of Clapton FC (as Downs FC in 1877)

William Davies, born in Hackney, was the eldest son of the a large Davies family and became a very successful stockbroker.

In August 1877, following a meeting at his fathers home in Queensdown Road, Clapton, he and a group of chums founded Downs FC which, a year later was renamed Clapton Football Club.

His great grandson says -

"My mother's memories - Uncle Reg. He was in the Stock Exchange. He was a shrewd man and made money and he was the wealthy chap of the family and he had four children. They had rather an army connection, that part of the family. They lived in Camberley, where of course the army had the colleges in Camberley".

In 1891 at Brentford, he married Ethel Beatrice Chambers, aged 25 years, the daughter of a prosperous London wholesale tea merchant.

William Davies, died, in Camberley, aged 81 years.
